Gradual increase in 2024 A/L pass rate: Exams Dept.

The Examinations Department yesterday announced that the pass percentage of the 2024 GCE Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has shown a gradual increase compared to previous years.

Addressing the media at a conference held at the Department, Commissioner General of Examinations Amit Jayasundara stated that 29,244 candidates had failed all three subjects of the A/L examinations.

A total of 274,361 candidates sat for the examination, of whom 177,588 have obtained the basic qualifications for university admission. This represents 64.73% of the total applicants.

The Department has also taken steps to suspend the results of 456 candidates who sat for the examinations this year. Applications for re-scrutiny of results should be submitted online from May 2 to 16, the Commissioner General added.

In the Biology stream, Sandithi Nimhara of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya, Kurunegala, secured first place in the country. Kalpa Vidusarani of Anuradhapura Central College came second, while Jamunanananda Pranavan of Jaffna Hindu College was placed third. Notably, his twin brother, Jamunanananda Saravanan, was ranked second in Jaffna in the Biology stream.

In the Mathematics stream, Lesundu Ransara Kumarage of Bandaranayaka College, Gampaha, achieved first place in the country. Kanthadasaan Thrasaraj of Cardley College, Point Pedro secured second place and Thevidu Dilmit Dahanayake of Bandaranayaka College, Gampaha, obtained third place.

In the Commerce stream, Amasha Dulari Perera of Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo secured the first place in the country. Induwara Sanhitha Kumarapeli of Royal College, Colombo secured second place, while Uttara Perera of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda, claimed third place.

Meanwhile, in the Arts stream, Senali Chamathka of Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha, achieved first place. Dinethmi Janakathna of Fergusson College, Ratnapura, secured second place, and Isuri Anjalika Peiris of Mahamaya College, Kandy, obtained third place.

It is also noteworthy that Kavindi Geethanjali of Rakwana Demuwawata Maha Vidyalaya, Rakwana, who appeared for the Advanced Level examinations while living with a disability, was ranked fifth in the Arts stream.

In the Bio-systems Technology stream, Nethmi Navodya of Sandalanka Central College, Kurunegala, emerged as the island’s first. Mahesha Parami of Pushpadana College, Kandy, secured second place, while Chamodi Hansika of Ratnawali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha, obtained third place.

In the Engineering Technology stream, Kavya Ravihansai of Mayurapada Central College, Narammala, secured first place. Ushan Malith of Seevali Central College, Ratnapura achieved second place and Pasidu Madhusankha Kusumsiri of Sri Sumangala College, Hikkaduwa, came third.
