Polluted air poses risk to pregnant mothers’ fetuses - Physician

With increasing attention on air quality, experiments have revealed that polluted air can negatively impact the fetus of pregnant mothers, Consultant Respiratory Physician Professor Duminda Yasarathne said

Exposure to polluted air can lead to reduced birth weight in fetuses and may cause respiratory problems in newborns. Additionally, there is a risk of stillbirths or the child being born with other medical conditions.

A new study is currently underway, supported by the Peradeniya and Sri Jayawardenepura Universities, to further investigate the impact of air pollution on health.

Professor Yasarathne also noted that 40% of patients visiting Outpatient Departments (OPDs) in hospitals suffer from respiratory issues. These range from minor breathing difficulties, runny nose and viral infections to more severe conditions like pneumonia.

He emphasised the importance of addressing air pollution to prevent its long-term health consequences.
