Virus halts longest Cricket encounter in Sri Lanka

The Coronavirus which has put on hold many of the sporting events has also forced the postponement of the longest played Cricket encounter between two of the prestigious schools in Sri Lanka.
The two schools Royal College and St Thomas’s Mt Lavina were due to play the 142 encounter early next month. The organisers wanted to keep the spectators out this time. But, after four of the players were found to be COVID-19 positive, the organizers have decided to postpone the event indenfinetly.
Throughout the years, even during war times including the 30 year old war the two teams played the game under tight security. Even the first and second world wars failed to halt the annual game.
The move also come as Sri Lanka has been hit by a virus surge since Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations on April 14 and doctors saying that a new UK variant of the virus was now prevalent in the country.
Sri Lanka has reported more than 100,000 cases and 647 deaths while the average number of daily cases was averaging 1000 per day.
