Sugar imports have been halted.

Damayanthi S. Karunaratne, the Controller of Imports and Exports, has announced that sugar imports to Sri Lanka have been halted as of June 22, 2021.
According to sources, the main reason for the halt of sugar imports was a lack of dollar reserves, and the government had already been warned by the import and export authorities that there were more than adequate sugar inventories in the country.
Following the announcement of the sugar import ban, certain wholesalers in Pettah had raised the wholesale price of white sugar by Rs. 6.00 per kilo and brown sugar by Rs. 10.00 per kilo, respectively.
