Sri Lanka’s vaccination program is moving fast track the China-donated Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine and the Russian Sputnik V vaccine. Approximately about seven hundred thousand have been vaccinated with these vaccinations.

Sri Lanka started its vaccine rollout on January 29 this year, with about a hundred thousand frontline workers in the health sector and the military receiving their first jab The rollout was suspended on April 15 amid allegations that a priority list had been unceremoniously discarded leading to irregularities.

State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control Dr Sudarshini Fernandopulle said that authorities are looking at every possible avenue to acquire more doses for those still awaiting their second shot of AstraZeneca.

“There are countries that have purchased and stored excess consignments of the AstraZeneca jab. We’re talking to those governments to see if we can acquire vaccines from them,” she said.
