Court of Appeal acquits Lalith Weerathunga and Anusha Palpilta from "Sil Redi case"

The Court of Appeal today acquitted former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Anusha Palpita from the “Sil Redi” case.
Weeratunga and Palpita were charged by the Attorney General with misappropriation of government funds by distributing Sil cloths to temples islandwide at a cost of nearly Rs. 600 million belonging to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission during the 2015 Presidential Election.
The two former Government officials, who were convicted on September 7, 2017 and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labor and fines by the Colombo High Court, are currently out on bail.
Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Pelpita filed petitions at the Appeal Court against the High Court’s verdict, claiming that the manner in which they were sentenced was against the law and seeking their acquittal and release from all charges.
