Kurunagala - Habarana railway project - environmental disaster?

An anesthetist and Electrical Superintendent have filed a Fundamental Right petition in the Supreme Court  saying that  the proposed Kurunegala-Dambulla-Habarana Railway Extension  would be an environmental disaster.

 

The two professionals argue that the proposed Kurunegala-Habrana Railway extension Project would cause loss to livelihood of many and harm the environment to a great extent.

 

The petitioners Mangalasiri Amarasinghe, ( anesthetist) and Kamal Rupasinghe, ( Electrical Superintendent ) have  named  Conservator General of Forest, Central Environmental Authority, Secretary, Ministry of Transport & Civil Aviation, Minister of Wildlife and Forest Conservation and Attorney General as respondents.

 

Petitioners state that the proposed Kurunegala- Dambulla Habarana (KDH) railway track which is to be about 80 kilometers will destroy forest in many areas including the Habarana jungles.
