Steps must be taken to eliminate child labour from country

The representatives of the National Steering Committee on Elimination of Child Labour agreed that immediate and effective steps must be taken to ensure the complete elimination of child labour from the country.
The decision was announced at the first meeting held at the Labour Ministry recently.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the National Steering Committee and Labour Ministry Secretary S.M. Piyatissa, presented a number of ideas and proposals related to the elimination of child labour from Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, the importance of giving the Employer Pledge introduced through the website of the Department of Labour www.labourdept.gov.lk with the aim of declaring that all forms of child labour can be eliminated from Sri Lanka by 2030 was also emphasized at this meeting.
Attention was also drawn towards how to increase the awareness of the public at grassroots level with the contribution of the media and community police committees to prevent and report child labour.
It was also pointed out that when focusing on national level statistics, it is worth noting that Sri Lanka is one of the countries with the lowest child labour in South Asia.
