PHI arrested for accepting Rs. 200,000 bribe to renew hotel license

A Public Health Inspector (PHI) was arrested by the Bribery Commission for accepting a bribe of Rs. 200,000 to renew a hotel’s license.

The PHI, attached to the Galewela Medical Officer of Health's office, was arrested following a complaint filed by a hotel owner in the Ibbagamuwa area.

The hotel operator, along with several friends, had applied to the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha to renew their business license for 2025. As part of the process, the PHI was required to inspect the hotel.

The PHI demanded Rs. 200,000 in exchange for providing a recommendation letter to the Pradeshiya Sabha.

Officers from the Bribery Commission arrested him in Thalkiriyagama while accepting the bribe.

The suspect is set to be produced before the Dambulla Magistrate's Court.
