ICC suspension illegal, says Sports Minister
Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe called the suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) illegal, saying that the body had not followed the correct procedure before suspending Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).
As an immediate measure he said he would approach the ICC to understand the nature of the suspension, failing which he would take steps to approach the body's Dispute Resolution Committee. "If that fails too, we will go to the Court of Arbitration of Sports (CAS)," he added.
He also alleged that the officials at SLC had asked for the suspension to be imposed, though he stopped short of validating these claims.
"The ICC have taken this decision arbitralally. We don't know on what basis this suspension had been imposed. Normally there is a long proceure before a team is suspended, with the decision taken at the Annual General Meeting where all member countries vote on it," the Minister said.
"However, they have not followed that procedure and the suspension is not ethical," he claimed.
