Sri Lankan boat found capsized near Periyathalai

The Hindu -Periyathalai fishermen salvaged a Sri Lankan boat that was found capsized and floating in the sea, and brought it to the shore.
When fibreglass fishing boats from Periyathalai in Thoothukudi district were returning to the shore on Friday evening, the fishermen onboard spotted a fibre boat floating upside down about seven nautical miles off Periyathalai coast.
They found that the boat was from Sri Lanka. They searched the surrounding area in the sea, but could not find anyone. Then they towed the boat to the shore.
Upon receiving information, a police team, led by Marine Police Inspector Pechimuthu, arrived at the location and conducted an inspection. Their inspection confirmed that the boat was from Kalpitiya in Sri Lanka.
The police are investigating whether the boat was carried away by ocean currents, capsized during fishing or was used by somebody for other purposes. The boat would be handed over to Customs officials, the police said.
