Man injured in Police shooting during illicit liquor raid in Kalpitiya

A 31-year-old man was injured after police opened fire during a raid on an illicit liquor den in Kalpitiya, Galle.
Police said officers from the Thelikada Police Station acted on a tip-off received via the 119 emergency hotline about an illegal liquor production near the Gin Ganga in the Dodangoda area of Thelikada.
Upon arriving at the scene, police encountered a group of individuals, one of whom, reportedly under the influence of liquor and armed with a sword, had attempted to threaten and assault the officers.
In response, police said they opened fire, injuring the suspect below the knee in what they described as an act of self-defense.
The injured suspect, a resident of Ganegama South in Baddegama, was admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital.
Police said several police officers were also injured during the incident and are receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Thelikada Police are conducting further investigations.
