Cabinet approves streamlining of coroner system

The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved proposals presented by the Minister of Justice, Prisons Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms, President's Counsel Dr Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, to streamline the coroner's role and improve efficiency in the system.
Currently, coroners are appointed based on "Korala," municipal division, and hospital basis, which has led to difficulties obtaining their services due to unclear jurisdiction boundaries.
Additionally, the long-term vacancies in some districts have caused inconvenience to the public. The Ministry of Justice has prepared a fixed manual outlining coroners' qualifications, responsibilities, and roles to address these issues.
The plan involves assigning all current coroners to Divisional Secretariats and identified hospitals, appointing bilingual inspectors for bilingual Divisional Secretariats, and making new recruitments to fill the remaining vacancies, aiming to provide a more efficient and regular service to the people.
