Legal action against buses parked at Welipenna Expressway

Legal action against buses parked at Welipenna Expressway

Legal action will be taken against buses which were parked along the Southern Expressway service area at Welipenna, the Express Highway Patrol Division announced.

They told  that parking vehicles on any side of the expressway or on any section of the road is prohibited under the Road Traffic Law. Parking in the emergency lane is permitted only in case of an emergency.

However, stopping on the expressway is allowed solely in situations involving danger prevention, police orders, vehicle breakdowns or accidents.

Meanwhile, the Expressway Operation, Maintenance and Management Division stated that the service area at Welipenna is insufficient to accommodate a large number of vehicles at the same time. The number of buses that arrived for the Galle Face rally in Colombo and those leaving Colombo after the event was overwhelming and could not be accommodated.

A senior official from the Expressway Management Division added that it would be beneficial to have another two or three expressway service areas to handle sudden surges in vehicle parking needs.
