AI-powered CCTV and GPS systems to be introduced

Long-distance buses in Sri Lanka will soon be equipped with GPS and CCTV systems powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), Minister of Transport Bimal Rathnayake said.
The initiative will cover both Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and privately operated buses.
Addressing the media, Minister Rathnayake emphasized that the new system is designed to reduce road accidents by closely monitoring driver behavior in real time.
“This technology will help us detect whether a driver is tired, sleepy, or using a mobile phone while on duty,” he said.
The minister noted that drivers often face challenges such as poor road conditions, mechanical issues, and inadequate lighting.
However, he stressed that monitoring the driver's alertness and behavior is equally crucial.
“Such systems are already in use internationally, where AI-enhanced GPS and CCTV tools monitor driver activities. We aim to implement a similar model here,” he explained.
According to Rathnayake, the AI-based safety system will be a requirement linked to the issuance of route permits for long-distance buses. He added that this initiative forms part of broader efforts to modernize public transport and improve commuter safety across the country.
