Ruwan Wijewardena was elected as the Deputy Leader of the United National Party on September 14 through a secret ballot held among members of the UNP Working Committee.

He received 28 votes and defeated Ravi Karunanayake, who obtained 10 votes, to be elected as the new Deputy Leader of the party..
