Mahaweli Authority says that the excess water in the reservoirs is not enough to generate hydroelectricity

 

The Mahaweli Authority says that the excess water in the reservoirs is not enough to be released for hydroelectricity production.


This was informed in a letter addressed to the Ministry of Power and Energy today (February 03).


According to the article, although there is 2,168 millimeters (73%) of water in the hydropower reservoirs connected to the Mahaweli River, only 1,442 millimeters (50%) of the water can be used to generate hydropower.


Meanwhile, it further states that although approximately 3,496 mm (73%) of water is available in reservoirs and water tanks belonging to the Mahaweli Authority and the Irrigation Department, only 2,488 mm (64%) of water can be allocated for hydroelectricity production.
