Govt relax ban on import of tyres

The Government has put on hold a programme initiated by the Police to check the condition of vehicle tyres and take action against the drivers if they wasted. This is while the government reassess the need to allow to import tyres again thereby lifting ban on imports.
Police got into action immediately after the bus accident in Passara which claimed 14 lives last week and started check tyres of vehicles and prosecuting the drivers if they wasted tyres in the vehicles.
Vehicle owners were seen rushing to tyre shops after the actions by the police, but they were told that there is a short supply of tyres or the prices have increased. The issue was also raised in Parliament prompting Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage to say the government will look into the complaint.
Accordingly, the matter came up at the cabinet meeting where they decided to hold back the decision on penalizing the drivers and re-assess the ban on import of tyres.
