Grade 10 - Health and Physical Education : Correct Posture

Hi Everyone! We hope you are keeping well and safe during this challenging time. Today, we aim at providing you with a summarized article based on “Correct Posture”, in line with the third lesson of the 10th grade Health and Physical Education curriculum.
The activities we do on a daily basis involve both static and dynamic postures. Static postures include activities such as standing, sitting and etc. whereas dynamic postures are walking, running and jumping. It is quite significant that we learn the correct ways of maintaining posture when we engage in numerous activities. The two major bio mechanical factors related to posture are Centre of gravity and Balance. The center of gravity can be cited as the point around which the weight of the body or an object acts. This changes according to the posture of a person as the weight or gravity of the body tends to spread in different directions. Balance is the state maintained by the body when it is at rest or in a constant motion that does not change. This happens when equal force is exerted on the either sides of the body. Several factors such as keeping the line of gravity within the supporting base, placing the center of gravity at a lower level or closer to the ground, maintaining a wider supporting base, movement of the body in the opposite directions when one is about to lose posture and bending the body towards an external force help to maintain the balance of the body. It is essential that we maintain correct static postures in our lives according to the bio mechanical factors we have discussed. For example, when we stand, we must ensure that our body is kept in a vertical stance where the hands need to be placed on either side of the body. We must place the feet apart with an even distance of the shoulder in a way that the body weight is distributed equally among the feet. Similarly, the other static postures like standing while working, sitting, sitting and working at a table, driving a vehicle, working at the computer and lying down should be maintained accordingly. It is essential that you get a thorough understanding about the aspects that apply to these static postures and apply them to the instances in real life. We must be mindful of the fact that failure to maintain correct posture can lead to a series of long term physical injuries, disabilities, strains and many other issues related to the spine and the muscles. Efficiency, reduction of pressure on the parts of the body, pleasant appearance and boosted self-confidence can be cited as the advantages of maintaining correct posture. Thus, we must always ensure that the center of gravity is applied at an appropriate point to balance our body when we maintain correct posture.
