Grade 6 - ICT : Importance of a Computer

Dear Children, we have already learnt about the Computer, its features, functions and components in the previous articles. We shall now explore how computers have made work easier and efficient in several sectors such as Schools, Hospitals, Banks, Agriculture and Factories.
As students we use the computer to gain extra knowledge on subject content and to find information by accessing the Internet. The lessons can be interactively presented and taught to the students using the computer, where devices such as the multimedia projectors are being used. The computer enabled learning process helps the students to understand the content well and it makes learning easier and efficient. It has also enabled us to save time. Teachers can use additional images and videos to the presentations using online tools and it will make the students learn attentively. Computers have made the complex traditional concepts simple in both schools and offices.

The banking sector too uses computers where the transactions can be made in a very short period of time from anywhere in the world. Many banks have the facility of Internet banking and Mobile banking where you can do any transaction from home, using your internet connection and a computer or a smart phone. This does not require people to visit the bank physically and it saves time. Many other convenient methods like the Automated Teller Machines (ATM) and the electronic cards have been introduced and these are very common among people today. We can use our credit or debit cards to withdraw money from the respective ATM machine that is located in the nearest town. Not only that, we can make quick cash deposits or pay our utility bills through the ATM machine. We can also use our electronic cards to settle our bills when we purchase goods and services. Thus, you don’t really need to rush to the bank to get cash. You can simply use your electronic card for this.

The computer systems have made several improvements in the health sector. Today, we can channel doctors from a distance through the internet .This is called E-Channeling. The hospitals are equipped with various computer systems in crucial places like the ICU and the Operation Theatres, where these systems have facilitated efficient treatment and quick diagnosis of diseases. Furthermore, the digital thermometer that can be cited as an example of an embedded computer device are mostly used in hospitals.

Industries too are equipped with many computer systems and this has enabled them to increase productivity and efficiency. Today, human labor/ workers are being replaced by computer devices. Robotic technology is an example for this. Computer systems have also enabled data analysis and monitoring procedures efficient within the industries. The maintenance of records in relation to the raw material stocks and human resources have become more organized with the use of computer systems.

Agricultural sector has reaped numerous benefits by the use of computer systems. The activities such as harvesting, weeding and water supplying can be done using embedded computer devices today. This has led to the reduction of costs and the rise of productivity. The GPS (Global Positioning Systems) are used by farmers to get various information regarding the seasons, weather patterns and etc. Various software can be used to store and maintain records in relation to the
stocks. The farmers can also gain extra knowledge on crop cultivation, fertilizer, seeds and new discoveries through online forums and the internet.

Thus, it can be stated that the use of computer systems in several sectors has resulted in increased productivity, cost savings and convenience within the relevant fields while allowing the people to get their work done more efficiently and easily in a very short period of time.
