News analysts comment that Sri Lanka should have learned a lesson from the Indian corona spike that emerged prior to the Sinhala –Tamil New Year. It is observed by news analysts that if Sri Lanka had reflected upon the Indian situation and restricted internal travel the current surge could have been controlled.

The highest number of deaths per day has been recorded in India. About 3000 people are dying per day and  a rise in daily coronavirus cases for a fifth straight day has been reported. A new “double mutant” variant has sent cases soaring, and undermined the government’s premature claims of victory over the pandemic.

 

Several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, have offered support as India’s under-funded healthcare system struggles to cope with the increasing demand for medical oxygen and hospital beds.
