Adani-led renewable energy project lacks legality, claims SL lawmaker

Sri Lankan lawmaker Professor Charitha Herath has alleged that the government is involved in an improper process of awarding India's Adani Group an on-grid renewable energy development project in Mannar and Poonaryn, along with a transmission line.

Herath, an independent legislator, claims that the project is being pursued in an illegal manner.

The agreement with Adani Green Energy Limited was signed in March 2022 for a 500 MW renewable energy project, but a new cabinet paper was reportedly submitted for approval in August 2023.

Herath raised concerns about the project's compliance with the Sri Lanka Electricity Act and questioned whether Adani Green Energy Limited was being treated as the representation of the Government of India.
