National Vesak Week begins in Nuwara Eliya today under President’s patronage

 The National Vesak Week begins today, with the inaugural ceremony scheduled to take place this afternoon at the Nuwara Eliya Buddhist Center under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

 

The Vesak Week will continue until May 16. The Nuwara Eliya District Secretary stated that support from the tri-forces and the police has been secured for the event.

 

All liquor stores and meat shops across the island will be closed for three days during Vesak Week.

 

Meanwhile, the Railway Department announced that special train services will operate from today to facilitate travel for the State Vesak Festival in Nuwara Eliya and for devotees visiting Anuradhapura.

 

These special train services will run until May 13.
