Rise in Chikungunya cases, highest number of infections reported

Sri Lanka is experiencing a rise in Chikungunya cases, with the highest number of infections being reported across the country.

Paediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children, Dr. Deepal Perera speaking said Chikungunya is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes.

He said that symptoms, including high fever, severe joint pain, skin rash and muscle pain, appear after two to three days.

Furthermore, he stated that the joint pain will be long-lasting.

Health authorities reported a higher number of mosquitoes during the rainy season and urged the public to take extra precautions to reduce mosquito breeding.

Meanwhile, Perera stated that there is no proper treatment for Chikungunya.
