Traffic lights, countdown systems to be implemented in all cities to reduce fumes, accidents

The pilot project of installation and renewal of traffic countdown systems for road signs will be initiated around the country as an important and timely step taken to reduce road accidents and to protect the lives of pedestrians, Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake said.

He said that due to unruly drivers and unnecessary chaos, some pedestrians have lost their lives while crossing roads in recent years.

Following the Minister’s instructions, the Department of Motor Transport's Vehicle Emissions Trust Fund has fully supported an expedited the project to modernize road signboards and install countdown systems in cities.

Previously implemented as a pilot project, these traffic signs allow drivers to see the remaining time on traffic lights, enabling them to manage their vehicle engines more efficiently. This results in better fuel efficiency and significantly reduces air pollution by minimizing unnecessary emissions.

The Vehicle Emissions Trust Fund has allocated Rs. 56 million for the first phase of this project, with Rs. 33 million recently provided to the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

As part of the initial phase, approximately 200 traffic lights will be installed. Under Minister Rathnayake’s guidance, the Vehicle Emissions Trust Fund is prepared to expand this initiative across the island in alignment with the Clean Sri Lanka project.
