Major earthquake may jolt parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal anytime

 

Scientists warn that the entire Himalayan region is vulnerable to tremors and that a major earthquake is always a strong possibility.

The massive earthquake in Turkey and Syria has claimed 47,000 lives and left millions homeless. It is heart-wrenching to watch the scenes as people mourn their lost family, friends and homes.

Such major events often raise the question of whether another earthquake is expected. Well, according to experts, Uttarakhand is vulnerable to such a major disaster anytime.

"The Earth's crust is made up of different plates that are constantly moving. The Indian plate is moving at about 5 cm per year, leading to accumulation of stress along the Himalayas, increasing the possibility of a major earthquake," NGRI chief scientist Dr N Poornachandra Rao told the news agency. He said. He added, “We have a strong network of 18 seismic stations in Uttarakhand.
